Frequently Asked Questions about AIDSLine Online

Q: Is there really a person on the other end?
A: Yes. From 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, AIDSLine Community Educators respond to your questions via instant messaging. By typing your questions, comments and responses, you will have an electronic conversation with a Community Educator. If you contact us outside of these hours you can send an email that a Community Educator will personally respond to. Please note that you will have to use a valid email address to receive a response to messages outside of business hours.

Q: Who are the people on the other end?
A: The people staffing AIDSLine Online are trained Community Educators who are knowledgeable about HIV related issues including transmission, statistics and resources for people living or concerned about HIV.

Q: Do the people on the other end know who I am?
A: No. The Community Educator you chat with will only know whatever you choose to write to them. They have no way of getting any other information about you. It is important to remember that the Internet may not be secure, so you should not provide any information that identifies you.

Q: Can someone else on the Internet listen in?
A: No. The session is strictly one-on-one only. AIDSLine Online is not a "chat room". In addition, your session with a Community Educator is encrypted. Our encryption system is similar to the security techniques used to protect credit card numbers used for Internet purchases.

Q: Do I need special software to use AIDSLine Online?
A: No. AIDSLine Online works within the Internet browser on your computer.

Q: Can I get a computer virus using AIDSLine Online?
A: No. AIDSLine Online can only send text to your computer, so it is impossible to send a virus.

Q: Can I get the same information by telephone?
A: Yes. The AIDSLine phone service is available Monday through Friday between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Call 1-800-248-2437 or 612-373-2437 to speak with a community educator. Call 1-888-820-2437 or 612-373-2465 for TTY access.
