Am I at Risk for HIV?We Have Resources to Help You Find Out
Questions about HIV?
Contact the AIDSLine. Our HIV Risk Calculator will help you assess your risk for HIV and give you tips to reduce your risk. HIV Transmission most commonly occurs through unprotected anal or vaginal sex or sharing needles. HIV can be transmitted during unprotected oral sex but the risk of this is much lower. HIV can also be passed from an infected mother to her baby before or during birth or through breast milk. The only infectious body fluids are blood, semen vaginal fluid and breast milk. Other bodily fluids including saliva, sweat, tears and urine are not infectious and cannot transmit HIV to another person.
HIV Testing is the only way you can know your HIV status. Many testing sites offer rapid HIV tests which can give you results in 10 to 40 minutes. To find a testing site near you, contact the AIDSLine or search for testing sites from the online version of the HIV Resource Guide (search with "testing" for Type of Service). Injecting drug use (IDU) has accounted for a significant number of HIV infections. In Minnesota, injecting drug use is a risk factor for 19 percent of all people known to be living with HIV. This figure includes people who inject drugs and people who were sexually active with someone who injects drugs. MAP has programming that specifically works to lower risk for people who inject drugs and their partners. You can learn more by reading about our IDU program.
