Senator Allan Spear
Allan Spear served Minnesota in the State Senate from 1972 through 2000. He was elected in 1993 to lead the Minnesota Senate as its President and later that year, succeeded in guiding the passage of Minnesota’s gay civil rights law. Sen. Spear was an early and key ally in the fight to stop HIV in Minnesota. He was the first recipient of MAP’s Paul and Shelia Wellstone Lifetime Leadership Award. MAP is pleased to annually present the Allan Spear Forums as a way to further honor and thank Sen. Spear for his part as a leader in Minnesota’s fight to stop HIV, and to continue his commitment to smart and effective advocacy. MAP has presented community forum series annually since 1996. This is the first year of presenting the series as a tribute to Sen. Spear’s work. Sen. Spear serves as the honorary chair of the forum series advisory committee.
The Allan Spear Forums were presented by Minnesota AIDS Project’s Public Policy, PrideAlive, Positive Link, development and communications services.
Dr. Ron Stall was presented with support from MAP’s Gay/Bi Men’s Health Education Service, which is funded in part with assistance from the Minnesota Department of Health. MAP thanks Intermedia Arts, Southern Theater and the Walker Art Center for special accommodations as hosts for Allan Spear Forums events. MAP thanks AM950/Air America Minnesota and Advocates for Youth for sponsorship support.
