Why Would I Call a Substance Use Systems Advocate?

  You are HIV positive, gay or bisexual and have experienced difficulty accessing substance abuse treatment, have been told not to disclose your HIV status or sexual orientation while in treatment, or told that you must disclose your HIV status or sexual orientation while in treatment contact the substance use systems advocate.
     
  You are a case manager, care advocate or other provider who serves HIV positive clients who are struggling with chemical dependency and seem to be consistently encountering barriers or issues in accessing substance abuse treatment or care once in treatment, you may wish to contact the substance use systems advocate.
 

 

Substance Use Systems Advocacy in Action Continued

Substance use systems advocacy has developed a number of other training sessions to educate about the interactions between HIV disease progression and various popular drugs and alcohol as well as the interactions between HIV medications and various popular drugs and alcohol.

  You work in a substance abuse treatment center, detox center, halfway house, or other chemical health program or social service agency in which you have HIV positive clients? The staff in your agency may benefit from training on HIV, and indeed, HIV education may be a licensing requirement for your staff. Give the systems advocate a call to discuss your training and education needs.
