Job-training for People Living with HIV/AIDS in the Mankato Area in June

“Education for Life” a job training and readiness program for HIV-positive adults will be offered in the Mankato area the week of June 4th to 8th. In addition to focusing on interviews, resumes, applications and computer training, participants will explore issues involving stigma, disclosure of status, managing stress and maintaining emotional health in the workplace. Each participant who successfully completes the training will receive a $200 stipend and a small lap top computer. Lodging and meals will be provided.

25th Year of the Minnesota AIDS Walk – a time to celebrate and rededicate!

In 1987, when the Minnesota AIDS Walk was first organized, an AIDS diagnosis was considered a death sentence. During the late 80s people living with AIDS described themselves as being treated the way lepers were treated in the Middle Ages – ostracized as “unclean” sources of contagion. The early Minnesota AIDS Walks were both brave and sad. In an effort to draw attention to the numbers effected and the need for support, gaunt men in wheelchairs were pushed along the route, and friends and families carried placards that they were walking in memory of friends, lovers, fathers, mothers, uncles, brothers, sisters. Other walkers had banners calling for a cure or demanding more responsive efforts from the government.

Free Film Festival at U of M from April 2 to 6

The free and fun 8th Annual Public Heath Film Festival opens on April 2nd at the University of Minnesota. Films include: We Were Here (documenting the early days of San Francisco’s AIDS epidemic), Orgasm, Inc (reporting on the race to find a female Viagra), and How to Die in Oregon (examining assisted suicide).

Training for Providers on Health Care Changes

Emergency Medical Assistance.  The Health Insurance Exchange.  Minnesota Care.  Pre-existing Condition Exclusions. Changes have already been made to our health care system, both at the federal level and in Minnesota, and more are on the way. Navigating Health Care Reform: Changes for Providers and Clients will give providers an understanding of the changes to health care so they are able to make sure their clients continue to get the best and most affordable care available.
