INTRODUCTIONThe world first learned about a new disease 25 years ago. In that time, progress has been made in extending the lives of millions of people. Yet, millions die worldwide every year as well. Minnesota AIDS Project continues to work toward its vision of a world free of HIV. Our hope is that in the next 25 years this vision will be realized. IN THE NEWS25 Years of AIDSOn Monday, June 5 the world recognized the 25th anniversary of AIDS. On that date in 1981 the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued the initial warning about a disease that would later become known as AIDS. Since its debut, AIDS has become a global pandemic affecting people from all walks of life. AIDS has affected more individuals than any other epidemic in modern history. Kaiser Daily HIV/AIDS Report summarized the media coverage of the 25th anniversary of the first AIDS diagnosis. HIV COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARDBelow are announcements submitted by HIV service organizations that are of general interest to Minnesota's HIV community. Email Bulletin Board announcements to the MAP AIDSLine by the 25th of each month for publication the following month. The Minnesota Red Ribbon Ride presented by Chipotle is a four-day, 300-mile bike ride that starts with an opening ceremony at 6:30 a.m. at the Mall of America East Rotunda on Thursday, July 13th, and ends with a grand closing ceremony at 2 p.m. at Richfield High School (7001 Harriet Ave, Richfield) on Sunday, July 16. Benefiting from the dollars raised are several Minnesota-based AIDS service organizations. They are: African American AIDS Task Force, AIDS Care Partners, The Aliveness Project, Clare Housing, Hope House of St. Croix Valley, Minnesota AIDS Project, Open Arms of Minnesota, Park House, and Rural AIDS Action Network. For more information, see the Web site. The Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) - HIV/AIDS Program now has a mental health program. With prior authorization from DHS, the program assists with payments for counseling and mental health therapy for people without other mental health coverage or whose mental health coverage is exhausted. If you are aware of a mental health agency that works well with persons who are HIV-positive, please forward the contact information to the MAP AIDSLine so that the agency can be added to the HIV Resource Guide. July 7 Positive Link Social 7 This month, Positive Link goes global - well, at least to the new Global market in the Midtown Exchange building, which is in the former Sears Building on the corner of Chicago Ave and Lake St in Minneapolis. July 8 American Red Cross of the St. Paul Area FATE Training FATE (Fighting AIDS Through Education) is an HIV peer education program for 9th through 12th grade students. FATE peer educators promote HIV awareness and prevention within their schools and communities through classroom presentations, school health fairs and special events such as World AIDS Day. The goal of FATE is to help young people raise awareness of HIV, learn lifesaving skills to prevent HIV infection and help others to take the steps they need to protect themselves from HIV. It is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the St. Paul Chapter headquarters building near downtown St. Paul. To register and for cost information, call 651-291-4689. July 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 American Red Cross Minneapolis Area Chapter African American HIV Education and Instructor Course This course prepares individuals to share information and teach the skills needed to reduce the risk of HIV infection within the African American community. Participants learn how to facilitate HIV educational sessions by gaining culturally sensitive teaching strategies to present facts about HIV accurately and nonjudgmentally, while dealing with related psychosocial issues. Participants must attend all of this training course to receive certification. It is at the Minneapolis Area Chapter headquarters building near downtown Minneapolis. July 11 Minnesota HIV Services Planning Council Meeting The Planning Council establishes program and service priorities that help determine how Ryan White funding will be used statewide. The Planning Council seeks membership from communities affected and infected with HIV, and meetings are open to the public. The full planning council meets on the second Tuesday of each month from 9 a.m. to noon at Redeemer Missionary Baptist Church in Minneapolis. July 11, 12, 13 Minnesota Department of Health HIV Testing Training This set of three courses covers prevention counseling, test results, and administration of the OraSure test. It is at Snelling Office Park, 1645 Energy Park Dr, St. Paul. Hours vary; call for details. July 11, 18 Minnesota AIDS Project (MAP) Legal Services Department Immigration Clinics Immigration clinics at MAP's Minneapolis office are staffed by volunteer attorneys and are held the second and third Tuesday of each month starting at 3 p.m. Consultations are by appointment only. July 11 Minnesota AIDS Project (MAP) Tuesday Niters On select Tuesday nights, volunteers meet at MAP to help with special projects. Tuesday Niters is a great way to help MAP and meet people at the same time. Join us from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at MAP, 1400 Park Ave S, Minneapolis. Volunteers are welcome to stop by when they can and leave at their convenience. Stop in and lend a hand! July 12 Minnesota AIDS Project and Basilica of St. Mary African Children's Choir Concert The African Children's Choir will be performing a blend of singing, dancing, and storytelling. The choir is selected annually from orphans and disadvantaged children in Africa. Many have lost one or both parents from war, famine and disease, including HIV. Donations will be collected during the concert. all proceeds go to support the education and care of children in Africa. The concert is at The Basilica of St. Mary, Hennepin at North Sixteenth St, Minneapolis and starts at 7 p.m. For more information, call 612-333-1381. July 15 Positive Link "BYOB" (Buy Your Own Brunch) Positive Link is meeting for "Buy Your Own Brunch" at the St. Clair Broiler, 1580 St. Clair Ave, Minneapolis. July 28, 29, 30 Rochester Pride Fest 2005 The GLBT community from Southeast Minnesota and the surrounding area will be gathering to celebrate GLBT pride. The festival at Central Park in Rochester will be from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 16. For information about other events, see the Web site. August 1 HIV Planning Council Community Voice Committee The Community Voice Committee is the arm of the HIV Planning Council that represents people living with HIV. It discusses how federal money should be spent to improve the lives of people living with HIV in Minnesota. Meetings are the first Tuesday of the month at 10 a.m. at Harriet Tubman Center, 3111 1st Ave S, Minneapolis.
