Minnesota Update: No Funding Recommended for HIV Prevention Education Targeting African-Born Communities
The Senate Health Budget recommendations did not include the $300,000 requested by MAP for a one-time, general awareness campaign to address HIV prevention in African-born communities. Prospects for funding in the House are not good, considering the fact that House leadership opposed the Senate plan to fund the initiative last year. Gov. Pawlenty's supplemental budget proposal included funding for TB and Hepatitis prevention programs targeting immigrants, but not HIV. Depending upon how this proposal progresses through the legislative process, there may be an opportunity to integrate HIV prevention into this new initiative.
