Minnesota Update: Comprehensive Sex Education Bill still Alive in Senate
Last Thursday the Senate Finance committee passed Senate File 2994. Senate File 2994 includes the Comprehensive Family Life and Sexuality Education bill. This is a good thing. The bill will now move to the Senate floor for debate and a vote. Please call your Senator and urge them to support SF 2994 as it is written and urge them to reject any attempts to amend the bill that would include abstinence-until marriage language.
Minnesota Update: Comprehensive Sex Education Bill Included in Senate Education Omnibus Bill
The Sex Ed for Life Coalition has worked for inclusion of the comp sex ed bill (SF 2977) into the Senate Education Omnibus bill. Comprehensive sexuality education includes a discussion of abstinence as well as risk-reduction. Comprehensive programs are inclusive and show respect for youth, giving them the information and skills needed to make mature decisions about sexuality for a lifetime.
Minnesota Update: Comp Sex Ed Bill Passes Senate Committee
On Tuesday, March 28, the Comprehensive Sex Education bill was heard in the Senate Education Committee. Sen. Sandy Pappas (DFL—St. Paul) the author of the bill presented the bill Amy Brugh, MAP public policy manager and Brigid Riley, MOAPPP executive director testified on behalf of the Sex Ed for Life Coalition. The bill will be rolled into the Senate Education Omnibus bill. It remains to be seen if the House of Representatives will hold a committee hearing on the comprehensive sex education bill.
Comprehensive sex education teaches both abstinence and contraception to reduce the risk of HIV, STIs and unintended pregnancy. This legislation would establish medically accurate, age appropriate comprehensive sex education in Minnesota.
