An overwhelming number of people still hold untrue and stigmatizing beliefs
about HIV. The need for general education and awareness about HIV and
STIs is as high as ever. $500,000 for HIV education targeting greater
Minnesota and $2 million for STI prevention is on the line. Contact Sen.
Linda Berglin (DFL-Mpls.) 651-296-4261/ sen.linda.berglin@senate.leg.state.mn.us
and Rep. Kevin Goodno (R-Moorhead) 651-296-5515/rep.kevin.goodno@house.leg.state.mn.us.
Tell them you want to see increased funding recommended for HIV and STI
prevention.
Minnesota's five regional K-12 HIV training sites have proven successful in helping schools districts improve their HIV, STI and sexual health curricula. $850,000 is needed to fund these sites plus two new ones. Contact Sen. Leroy Stumpf (DFL-Thief River Falls) 651-296-8660/sen.leroy.stumpf@senate.leg.state.mn.us and Rep. Alice Seagren (R-Bloomington) 651-296-7803/rep.alice.seagren@house.leg.state.mn.us
The number of reports of stigma, discrimination and misuse of health data is on the rise. $300,000 over the next two years is being sought to educate employers about HIV. Call Sen. Richard Cohen (DFL-St. Paul) 651-296-5931/ sen.richard.cohen@senate.leg.state.mn.us and Rep. Dan McElroy (R-Burnsville) 651-296-4212/ rep.dan.mccelroy@house.get.state.mn.us
After a delay, the Bush Administration has agreed to let the health care privacy regulations go into effect, but not without talk of modifications that would open up adolescent health records Advocates are also concerned with the proposed budget which allows no increases for Ryan White CARE Act funding and inadequate increases in other domestic HIV/AIDS programs.
Scott Evertz has been nominated Director of the White House Office of Nat'l. AIDS Policy. The first openly gay official in the Bush administration and first gay ONAP director, the nomination has raised the ire of social conservatives who are organizing to oppose the nomination.
