2006 Voter Engagement Update: 2006 Election Results
It’s all over folks! After a long, grueling campaign season, you can now get back to your regular T.V. viewing-free of political ads, and election updates. The votes are in from the Secretary of State, and Minnesota has turned bluer. The House of Representatives sits at 85 (DFL) 49 (R), the Senate at 44 (DFL) 23 (R), and the offices of Secretary of State, Attorney General, and State Auditor were won by DFL candidates. In Minnesota 59% of eligible voters came to the polls to cast their ballots, the highest turnout in the country. The highly contested Gubernatorial race came to a close in the early morning hours, with former Attorney General Mike Hatch conceding to Governor Tim Pawlenty. The official breakdown showed Pawlenty leading with 46.7% of the votes to Hatch’s 45.7%.
Minnesota also makes history with the election of its first female U. S. Senator, Amy Klobuchar, and its first African American U.S. Representative, Keith Ellison.
A HUGE THANK YOU!
To those of you who volunteered your time with the Minnesota Participation Project (MPP) on election day, and to all others who helped and/or encouraged voters to get to the polls, thank you for continuing to contribute to the democratic process.

Minnesota Update: Our Elected Officials and Sex Education in Minnesota
All of our elected officials will have an opportunity to address the state of sex education in Minnesota this coming session. By supporting legislation that would require medically accurate, comprehensive sexuality education, legislators and the Governor could be part of an effective effort to curb teen pregnancy, STI and HIV infection rates in Minnesota.

Federal Update: Abstinence-Only Education to Target Single Adults up to Age 29
The Federal government has recently updated the guidelines on the abstinence-only programming to include single adults up to 29 years of age. Valuable federal tax dollars will be used to support this programming. “The National Center for Health Statistics says well over 90% of adults ages 20-29 have had sexual intercourse.”
The Minnesota AIDS Project supports medically accurate, comprehensive sexuality education that includes both abstinence and contraception. Comprehensive sexuality education is crucial to stopping HIV.

Announcement: World AIDS Day Event, “Am I? Are You?”
Minnesota AIDS Project and Intermedia Arts present a unique event in observance of World AIDS Day on December 1, 2006. Beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Intermedia Arts, 2822 Lyndale Avenue South, Minneapolis, the event is free and open to the public. It begins with a poignant remembrance ceremony honoring the more than 2,700 victims of HIV in Minnesota, followed by comments by Lorraine Teel, Executive Director of Minnesota AIDS Project. Highlighting the event is the premiere of a project by Twin Cities photographer, Justin Thai.
Designed to confront the viewer on perceptions of what people living with HIV look like, “Am I? Are You?” is an evocative photographic exhibit featuring fifty portraits that challenge the observer to determine which 25 of the 50 models are HIV positive.
