Minnesota Update: Sex Ed Legislation Passes on the House Floor

On Monday night, the sex ed legislation passed on the House floor, by a vote of 79-53. There were several amendments proposed that would have weakened the bill but they were all defeated. It is because of your work that this legislation has continued to move forward at the Capitol. Your calls, emails, and in person meetings make all of the difference, keep up the good work! This victory comes after nearly ten years of hard work and organizing on the part of hundreds of volunteers.

As noted in the HIV Action Network email last week, the Senate also passed sex ed on the floor. Read more about the next steps for sex ed in the following section of the HIV Action Network alert.

TAKE ACTION: Check the vote count to see how your Representative and Senator voted.

  • Call and thank them for their support if they voted to include sex ed in the education bill.

  • Call and tell them why you support the legislation if they voted NOT to include sex ed.

Sample Message to Representative and Senators:
Hi Senator/Representative ________, my name is __________ and I am your constituent. Thank you for support of the sex education legislation. Continue to support sex ed and send this legislation to Governor Pawlenty.

The Minnesota AIDS Project, in partnership with the Coalition for Responsible Sex Ed, is working hard to keep responsible sex ed legislation moving forward. We support this legislation because we know that responsible sex ed programs can help to prevent HIV infection. We’ll continue moving these bills through the process with the goal of sending a bill to the Governor this session.

Minnesota Update: It’s Not Over Yet! Sex Ed in Conference Committee This Weekcap

Sex ed has passed on both the House and the Senate floor. What’s next, you ask? The Senate and House will convene what is called “conference committee” to hammer out the differences between their respective Education Policy Omnibus bills. Sex ed has been included in both the Senate and the House Education Policy Omnibus bills. Now we have to make sure that it stays in.

In The News: Representative Neva Walker Named Best Politician by City Pages & Sex Ed Coverage

Nevas

Representative Neva Walker has beenrecognized by City Pages as the “Best Politician” in their annual Best Of edition. Representative Walker has been a huge supporter of the Minnesota AIDS Project throughout her time in office. She has authored the sex ed legislation for years and has advocated tirelessly on its behalf. Rep. Walker also authored the HIV prevention initiative legislation for foreign born immigrants that passed the legislature in 2007. This will be Representative Walker’s final legislative session, as she will not seek re-election in 2008.
