HIV is primarily spread through sexual contact therefore educating young people about sexual health, including abstinence, is critical.

AIDS Action Day 2008 Recap

AAD

AIDS Action Day 2008 was a success because of you! We have heard from several legislators that met with constituents how great it was to hear from you. Whether you attended the noon rally, lobbied your state senator and representative, sent a letter, or made a phone call—your efforts made a difference. Thank you!

Your stories and concerns were heard on Tuesday, March 18. The sex education legislation was acted on in the Senate and the House that day. With your continued advocacy on sex education, we are hopeful that this important legislation will make it to the Governor’s desk this year.

Federal Update: CDC Releases 2006 HIV Surveillance Report

The CDC recently released their 2006 U.S. HIV surveillance report, including a significant increase in reported HIV cases throughout the U.S.. The infection rate reported for 2006 was 52,878.  That is up from 35,537 in 2005.  There are some important things to keep in mind when talking about this increase.  In 2005 the report only accounted for 38 states while in 2006, 45 states were included.  The seven states added in 2006, included California, the largest populated state, and Illinois, the fifth largest populated state. This data is alarming at first glance, but it will take several years of data collection to do an equivalent analysis.
