SHIELD

SHIELD (Self–Help in Eliminating Life–threatening Diseases) is a three–week, six–session group program designed to provide training as a Peer Educator. Building on participant's existing knowledge of HIV, SHIELD will help develop the communication skills needed to educate others on HIV prevention, fostering safer and healthier lifestyles.

Who is eligible to participate in the SHIELD program?

  • Gay/bi/questioning men age 18 or older
  • Who currently use drugs or who have in the past
  • And want to make a difference in the lives of those around them

Program participants earn gift cards for each SHIELD session completed, starting with a $10 gift card for the first session, $5 gift cards for the second through fifth sessions, and a $20 gift card for completing the program. SHIELD also offers transportation assistance to and from sessions in the form of bus or gas cards. Program graduates also earn $10 for each client they refer to the program.

SHIELD participants who have graduated from the program are encouraged to attend monthly booster sessions at the Minnesota AIDS Project. These sessions allow program graduates to meet with other Peer Educators and learn new information and skills. Visit our Events Calendar for a schedule of upcoming booster sessions.
