Low Income Subsidy – Extra Help

Extra Help is a program administered by Social Security that helps cover the monthly premium for Medicare Part D, deductibles and copays. Recipients of Extra help will not have a donut hole.

Eligibility

A person is automatically eligible for Extra Help if they have both Medicare and Medical Assistance, Supplemental Security Income or a Medicare Savings Program. Other people are eligible if their annual income is below $16,335 annually for an individual or $22,065 for a married couple in 2011. Individuals must have assets under $12,510 and married couples must have assets under $25,010.

How to Apply

You can apply for help with prescriptions through the Social Security website or call Social Security at 800–772–1213 to request a paper application.
