Medicare Savings Program

Medicare Savings Programs cover the premium for Medicare Part B and sometimes other Medicare costs. See the specific program descriptions below for more detailed information.

  • Qualified Medicare Beneficiary (QMB): The QMB program covers the premium for Medicare Part B. Recipients of QMB also have their Medicare deductibles and copays waived.
  • Service Limited Medicare Beneficiary (SLMB): The SLMB program covers the Medicare Part B premium.
  • Qualified Individual (QI–1): The QI–1 program covers the Medicare Part B premium. Note: Individuals on QI–1 cannot be on Medical Assistance at the same time.
  • Medical Assistance for Employed Persons with Disabilities (MA–EPD): Certain people on MA–EPD are eligible to have their Medicare Part B premiums paid for by the county human services office.

How to Apply

Medicare Savings Programs are administered by county human services offices. Individuals can apply in person at the nearest County Human Services Department, download and print applications from the Minnesota Department of Human Services website or request an application from the Minnesota Department of Human Services at:

Medicare Savings Program enrollees must reapply annually and must report changes in income or household composition as they occur.
