For over thirty years, our Legal Services Program has helped people with HIV to navigate the complicated Social Security claim process.

If you have HIV or are at risk, we can assist you with Social Security Disability applications and appeals. We work with people living with HIV as well those who are most impacted by HIV – namely gay and bisexual men, people of color, and foreign-born Minnesotans. We also provide legal representation to the family members of people living with HIV.

Statistically, people who have representation are more likely to be awarded benefits than those who do not. We can begin helping you at any level of the process, including your initial application.

If Social Security Administration (SSA) denies your claim, we can assist you through the appeal process. We can help you with:

  • Filing an appeal
  • Completing SSA forms
  • Obtaining medical evidence from your doctors
  • Conducting legal and medical research on issues related to your conditions
  • Representing you at your legal hearings

Social Security Disability cases are handled on what’s called “a contingency fee basis”. This means we only receive a fee if your case is approved, and there is no up-front cost to you. Our fee is a portion of any past due benefits awarded, and consultations are free. The fee is 25% of past due benefits and cannot exceed a “maximum” amount of $6,000, as outlined by the Social Security Administration.
